Substack is too expensive
But I'd like to offer you a deal.
Substack’s minimum paid subscription fee is silly - $5/month or $30/year. That’s unsustainable for a lot of people, especially those of you who want to subscribe to multiple accounts at once.
At the moment, getting a paid sub to Write Sinister isn’t worth much, because I’ve been putting up most of my posts free for the first couple of months after publication, so you’ve had plenty of time to read them all.
I’m going to continue doing that, mostly, but I’m also going to start putting some stuff behind the paywall automatically.
One exciting thing that’s going to be behind the paywall is bonus content for Tales of the Dragonlands, including, perhaps, some of the spicier scenes that didn’t make it into the public-facing posts. I’m also just generally playing around with queer romance, and I might just toss a few of those stories back behind the paywall as well.
Now, could I just not subject an audience built from weird fiction and horror to my current dalliances with draconic fantasy and queer romance? Could I just create a new Substack to post that kind of stuff? Sure. But I have your attention already, and surely there will be some of you whose interests in weird fiction and horror overlap with an interest in fantasy and queer romance.
To be clear: I’m still writing horror and weird fiction, and you’ll still see plenty of that on Write Sinister. I’m just also doing other stuff right now, and I want to kind of separate that other stuff and put some of it behind a paywall.
Your call, as always. No hard sell, no pressure. I built Write Sinister not to make money, but to build an audience. I’m just saying that if you were ever going to consider buying a paid subscription, this would be a decent time to do so.
Thanks as always for reading my weird little left-handed corner of the Internet.
Cheers,
E. D. Jones
